She’d wandered just far enough from the herd to make a statement. This bighorn ewe had claimed her own small patch of the National Elk Refuge. Unhurried but fully aware she was being watched. When the car slowed and the window came down, she didn’t bolt. She turned, squared her shoulders, and held her ground with the quiet authority of an animal that has never once needed to prove herself.

Her winter coat was still shedding in thick, textured patches, with a sprig of green disappearing at the corner of her mouth. The soft, overcast light rendered every curl of her wool in sharp relief against the sage-covered hillside behind her.

Bighorn sheep are one of the defining wildlife symbols of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and close, unhurried encounters on her terms are rarer than they look.
