Description
Antelope Flats, April
Antelope Flats Road | Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
I’d been driving through the storm for the better part of two hours before this shot presented itself. The park was nearly empty (a spring snowstorm in late April will do that) and the roads that are usually worked over by midmorning were quiet enough that I could stop the car, get out, and stand in the middle of Antelope Flats Road without inconveniencing anyone.
That’s what this image required. The snow stakes on either side of the road, the wet pavement leading forward, the lone cottonwood dissolving into the whiteness ahead. None of it works from the shoulder.
The Tetons were completely gone. The sagebrush on either side was barely holding its color. What was left was one tree and a lot of weather, and the question of whether that was enough. I think it was.
This is what Grand Teton looks like in the shoulder season, when the crowds haven’t arrived and the mountains aren’t cooperating.
