Winston and I (I’m the one with brown hair)

It Begins.

May 3rd, 2026. The adventure of the atomic cowboy begins!

Let me introduce myself. I am Braedon, also known as the Atomic Cowboy, a nuclear engineer who has stumbled upon a passion for wildlife and photography.  Photos taken of the desert steppe, a countryside that is often gone un noticed. A country that has stories to tell, if one just takes a moment to slow down and notice.  With every photo taken and shared, the hope is to share the hidden beauty of land that I love most.

I like to hike and occasionally bike to get my shots, so I try to keep my gear simple. Not necessarily light, unfortunately, but simple. My only camera body is a Canon EOS R5, and I love that thing. I bought it a year ago, and it is a quantum leap over the Canon T6s I had before then. I prefer to shoot Canon, just because that is the brand I grew up on. The controls of other brands feel backwards to me, even if their hardware is just as good. The two main lenses I use are an EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM for most of my landscapes and an RF 200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM for wildlife photography. This all kicks around in a 31L WANDRD Prvke pocket camera bag, which is the first camera bag I don’t hate.

Things are pretty bare bones around the website right now. I’m learning both how to make a website and also how to design one at the same time, but things are getting there. Stay tuned for more pictures and more field notes in the near future.

Image of the Month

For now, let me highlight one of my favorite pictures I have taken, Red Canyon Robin. I was visiting my parents at their red canyon cabin, and we went for mountain bike ride around the area. I had just happened to bring my camera along, mainly because I wanted to see how well I could bike and carry camera gear at the same time. We stopped to admire a view, and I just happened to notice this robin off to the right. I loved the way his rusty red breast complimented the weathered post he was sitting on, as well as the old barbed wire attached it.
